Joomla - Let's dance with me

Last week, I was exploring the use of Open Source Web Development Framework. Basically, I was looking for ready made web template that I can use. It must be fairly easy to install and customized. And yet look professional. Or, yes, it got to be FREE.

Tried a couple such as PHP-Nuke, PostNuke and XOOPS. All three were given free by my web hosting company. Did not like the solution because it is very much an improve version of forum and bulletin board.

After some searches, I found Joomla. I like it because it can be easily installed into a web server as long as it support Apache, PHP and Mysql. A standard feature in many web hosting companies.

The installation and customization is also very straight forward. What I did to get it online with some decent look and feel:

1. Read a good online tutorial on how to install Joomla. There are about 13 steps. So, remember to read through it.

2. Download Joomla latest stable version 1.0.11 Just click on the Download Release button near the button of the screen.

3. Configure Mysql database

4. Upload! Remember to get Filezilla Is faster and provide better control when you upload the package

5. Install! Follow the steps closely given in the tutorial.

6. After going thru the basic step up according to the tutorial, you can start exploring and customizing your site!

What I did was:

1. Get some free template. To install them is easy, just log in as administrator and look for the 'Installer' tab.

2. I realized that the editor and image management were not up to mark, so I downloaded free extension
Please Note:You must install the Admin Component first, then the Editor Mambot, and then download and install your choice of plugins using the Plugin Manager in the Admin component. For me, I installed the editor and image manager.

Go try it. Is easy and is powerful.. Look at my 'finished site' here.
