-1 * -1 = 1

I am sure we can explain 2 * 2 in layman term easily. We can explain it by using example such as there is 2 chairs in a row and there is a total of 2 rows. How many chairs do we have?

We can also explain  -2 * 2. For example if I owe you $2 in two occasion, how much do I owe you in total.

Try explaining -1 * -1.

OK, let me try:

I borrowed Book #1 from you and you borrowed Book #2 from me. So in total we each have a Book.
