Advertising - Instant Ads Set the Pace on the Web - NYTimes.com

Online advertising is getting much more targeted now.  Online advertisers currently can target their advertisements based on demographics, income and even location.  In the case of Google, it can also target the advertising based on the content of the websites the internet users are visiting. 

There seem to be a new development now. Pioneered by AppNexus, advertisers can now bid not just a block of advertising space but in smaller unit.
