School districts discourage online social networking by teachers

NETiquette (On-Line Etiquette): Tips for Adults & Teens: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter! Terminology….and moreIn some districts in US, they are setting rule to disallow teachers to use social media.  Teachers are not suppose to be 'friends' of their students on social networking site such as Facebook.  Siting the need to be professional both inside and outside of the classroom, they are concern of the conduct of the teachers when they are on social media.

I think these districts should strongly encourage their teachers to use social media to connect with their students.  They could take that opportunity to educate their students and to do so in a positive manner. The problem is not social media; The problem is inappropriate behavior.  What do you think?
